The latest chip announced by MediaTek is nothing more than an already known but slightly weakened 4G SoC: the effect of this extraordinary smartphone market, with prices now skyrocketing.
This year MediaTek is called to confirm the excellent figure made last year with its 5G chips for the medium and high range, the Density. But it is also called upon to defend the hard core of its reference market, i.e., the medium-low range manned by Helio G chips with 4G connection. And a new SoC was born in this family of chips: the MediaTek Helio G36 4G, the little brother of the MediaTek Helio G37 4G.
To summarize in very few words before going into detail: the MediaTek Helio G36 4G is a MediaTek Helio G37 4G with the working frequency lowered by 100 MHz, therefore from the previous maximum of 2.3 GHz to 2.2 GHz. For the rest, the two chips are the same.
So eight-core architecture, all Cortex A53 (not thunderbolts of war), a 680 MHz IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU, a maximum drivable memory of just 8 GB, and eMMC 5.1 type storage (not even a thunderbolt of war).
Understanding all the limits of the chip, Chip is enough to say that it can manage displays with a maximum refresh of 90 Hz and record videos at a maximum of 1080p at 30 frames per second, made by a video camera with a complete resolution of 50 MP. In addition, connections are limited to WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, and 4G cellular networks.
Inexplicably, MediaTek persists in proposing its Helio G range (including this Helio G36), defining it as suitable for cheap gaming smartphones. The ” G ” of the name stands for ” gaming. “Everything can be done with a smartphone with Helio G36, except play.
The choice to propose a castrated version of Helio G37, on the other hand, seems to derive from the fact that very few smartphones with the G37 have been seen (only the Motorola Moto G22 from memory). The risk is that the same also happens to the cheaper (but by how much, really?) Helio G36.
The problem, perhaps, is that by now, the whole smartphone market has crazy prices, which rise more and more every month. In such a scenario, it isn’t easy to convince a buyer to buy a 4G phone for 200 euros or more in 2023. And Motorola’s Moto G22 has already collapsed from the initial price of 220 euros to just 140 euros.
