MediaTek’s New Chip Brings Full Support For 5G To The Low-Medium Range Of The Market: We’ll See It On Cheap Smartphones On Sale At Christmas 2022
MediaTek has announced the new Dimensity 1050 chip, the company’s first chipset to offer both full 5G support: both millimeter-wave (mmWave) and normal sub-6GHz frequencies. A feature, the latter, is not obvious: for example, we do not find it on the MediaTek Dimensity 9000, the company’s current top-of-the-range chip.
Therefore, the new SoC MediaTek Dimensity 1050 expands the Dimensity family we already know and presents itself as a less powerful version of the MediaTek Dimensity 1100. Among its most interesting specifications, we note the support for screens with a Full HD + resolution and a frequency maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz, native support for the AV1 codec, the ability to play HDR10 + content and record HDR video simultaneously with the front and rear cameras. Along with the Dimensity 1050, the MediaTek 930 5G and the MediaTek Helio 699 4G were also presented, two entry-level chips with 4G-only modems destined for the less technologically developed markets of the planet.
Dimensity 1050: Technical Characteristics
According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 1050 ” will offer end-to-end 5G experiences, uninterrupted connectivity and superior energy efficiency to meet the needs of everyday users “. A very vague definition to describe the typical user of the new chip: the common one, who does not seek absolute performance but wants a phone to surf the Internet well and with a battery that reaches at least until the evening.
The MediaTek 1050 SoC has a 6nm octa-core configuration with two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores (clocked at 2.5 GHz) and four unspecified high-efficiency cores, which could be the classic Cortex-A55. The GPU is the Mali-G610 paired with MediaTek’s HyperEngine 5.0 suite that provides image and video optimization tools and features.
In addition, to complete 5G, there is no lack of Wi-Fi 6E and support for antennas in 2 × 2 MIMO configuration.
MediaTek Diminesity 1050: Availability
The new SoC MediaTek Dimensity 1050 will be available from September onwards from the third quarter of 2022. We will probably see onboard many low-mid-range phones launched, given the Christmas purchases at the end of the year.
