Qualcomm X65, The Modem With Record Speed

Qualcomm Launches The New Snapdragon X65 5G RF-Modem With Unprecedented Speeds: It Downloads Data Up To 10 Gbps And Can Be Used On Smartphones, PCs, Robots, And For Industry 4.0 5G Networks

Qualcomm has created a new fourth-generation 5G RF modem that promises to reach maximum data download speeds of 10 Gigabits per second, equal to 1.25 Gigabytes per second on 5G networks. Precisely the data transfer speed is record-breaking because it allows you to obtain results from the 5G network equal to those of a wired connection, such as fiber.

The Snapdragon X65 is the first RF ( Radio Frequency modem ) system compatible with release 16 of the 5G standard formulated by 3GPP (the international working group that drafted the specifications of the new fast connection) and is being distributed to OEMs, with the first devices that could arrive on the market as early as 2021.

The new RF modem will be equipped on high-end devices, including top-of-the-range smartphones, PCs, mobile hotspots, robots, and even modems for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) connections and corporate private 5G networks. An important step, especially for the arrival of 5G in companies, where it will represent a further advance in the evolution of industry 4.0.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X65: The Features

The Snapdragon X65 RF-modem not only offers an increase in data download speed but also the better battery life of the devices that integrate it, better coverage, and decreased latency compared to Qualcomm’s previous X60 modem technology which is the integrated modem inside Qualcomm’s latest top-of-the-range SoC, the Snapdragon 888.

This will result in more stable and clear video calls even if more people are connected at the same time and in fewer connection drops while playing in streaming, just to give two examples related to the consumer world. The Snapdragon X65 consists of a chip with a 4nm manufacturing process with a maximum download speed of 10 Gbps, compared to 7.5 Gbps of the X60, and supports standalone and non-standalone 5G networks, Sub-6 GHz and millimeter waves (mmWave).

In particular, the Snapdragon X65 modem paired with the Qualcomm QTM545 4th generation mmWave antenna module allows for higher transmission power than the previous generation in all mmWave frequencies.

A future-proof RF-modem, given that its upgradeable architecture is designed to be able to follow the evolution of the 5G network infrastructures, currently projected towards standalone and mmWave models that offer better performance.

The possibility of updating its architecture makes it the first modem compatible with the 3GPP Release 16 specifications, that is the specifications provided for the implementation of “phase 2” of 5G networks which will be even more performing, allowing this technology to expand into new application sectors such as automotive, Internet of Things (IoT ) and industry 4.0, where production processes are increasingly automated.

The transmission system management technology is based on artificial intelligence, with algorithms that are able to adapt the transmission power to always guarantee the highest data transfer speed, the best coverage, and maximize battery life.

The modem can also count on Qualcomm 5G PowerSafe 2.0 technology and Smart Transmit for monitoring and managing energy consumption.

Qualcomm X65: 5G Arrives At Home And In The Office

The technical characteristics will allow the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 RF modem to easily implement all the new features of future 5G networks, allowing the user, through simple software updates, to increase the potential of the modem over time.

This paves the way for fixed wireless access or Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), which allows broadband coverage to be obtained via the 5G network even in those areas that are not yet reached by the fiber optic infrastructure, guaranteeing completely comparable performance with those of the wired network. This result will be possible thanks to the combination of X65 with the new Qualcomm QTM547 mmWave antenna module.

The two devices are designed by Qualcomm to work in synergy, extending the range of 5G thanks to the 8 antennas of the QTM547 module. This will enable telecom operators to offer faster fixed broadband Internet service, both in homes and businesses, using their existing 5G infrastructure.

Qualcomm X65: Not Just Fast Speeds

What differentiates X65 from rivals is the use of artificial intelligence for the optimization of the connection on mmWave waves, which is fast but can only travel over short distances, so much so that it is easily blocked by trees and even by the hands holding the smartphone.

Using the AI, the X65 is able to detect how the device is being held, and therefore if the signal is blocked by a hand, and adapt the use of the antennas accordingly, so as to always guarantee the maximum possible speed.

Qualcomm’s technology will find wide applications and will be equipped on the first devices arriving on the market as early as mid-2021.

In industry 4.0 Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 will allow companies to focus on industrial design and device user interface because this chip will be able to handle the complexity of reflection and refraction of 5G waves since it is able to cover all mm-Wave frequencies, even those of the new n259 band at 41 GHz. In this way, whatever the design of the company’s production lines will be, coverage will always be guaranteed, in a stable and fast way.
