The smart working continues to “kill people”. In a positive sense, of course. In fact, the possibility of working from home does not only attract the attention of employees: companies are also increasingly interested in agile work and prepare short and medium-term plans and strategies to allow their employees to work without having to go to the office.
In Silicon Valley, for example, smart working is a consolidated work practice encouraged by the companies themselves: Automatic, the developer house that created WordPress, guarantees a monthly contribution to employees who work from home and has now closed most of its offices around the world. The phenomenon, however, is rapidly spreading also to our latitudes.
More and more Italian companies are offering their employees the opportunity to work from home: Fastweb, Barilla, Unicredit, and Siemens are some of the companies that have made agile work a (new) working philosophy.
The advantages that smart working guarantees, both to the employee and to the company, are many. Companies, for example, can optimize costs for corporate offices and the management costs associated with them. With fewer employees in the office, you will have to bear fewer costs for electricity, heating and other utilities, but also for the cleaning of the premises or the provision of the canteen service.
Not only that: if the number of employees working from home is high, it will also be possible to close some offices, totally eliminating the costs associated with their management and maintenance. Workers, on the other hand, will no longer need to travel from home to work, saving tens and tens of minutes (if not hours) “dedicated” every day to commuting. This corresponds to a decrease in the level of stress and an increase in productivity.
According to Mariano Corso, Scientific Director of the Smart Working Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano “the potential economic and social benefits of adopting agile working models are enormous. An increase in productivity of 15% per worker can be estimated. a reduction in the absenteeism rate of 20% and an improvement in the balance between work and private life for about 80% of workers “.
Smart working, however, is also good for the environment. According to a study entitled “Added Value of Flexible Working” and commissioned by Regus, a global supplier of workspaces, large-scale deployment of agile working would cut 214 million tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, equivalent to ‘work of 5.5 billion trees.
The continuous “diaspora” of employees towards their homes also leads to a “reworking” of the spaces inside the offices. In fact, smart working is also divided into company spaces, which must be reviewed and corrected to better adhere to this new philosophy. Closed and “compartmentalized” offices are replaced by open spaces and “nomadic desks”, which can be used by anyone who arrives first at the office.
This allows the spaces within the company headquarters to be reorganized more efficiently, to the benefit of employee productivity and the costs to be incurred for office management.
In order for an agile work project to be successful, however, it needs to respect certain specific characteristics. For example, it will be essential to have a connection to the Internet that is stable, fast, and reliable. Regardless of whether we work at home or on the move, in fact, we should be sure that we can always connect, wherever we are.
For this, it is necessary to choose an operator that offers cutting-edge technologies both in terms of fixed lines and on that of mobile connectivity. Fastweb, for example, was recently awarded the recognition of “Best fiber optic operator in Italy” by the weekly newspaper “Affari e Finanza” of Repubblica and boasts one of the fastest 4G networks and the best coverage in our country (98 % of the national territory). Furthermore, Fastweb is already investing in 5G technology, with pilot projects in major Italian cities that have already started several months ago.
The choice of a single operator for both the fixed-line and the mobile line will also make it possible to optimize management times and costs. In case of problems, you will have to deal with a single assistance center, while the signing of a single contract for landline and mobile will allow you to access special offers, reserved for the most “loyal” customers.
